Oral piercings or tongue mutilation can be dangerous and lead to more serious complications. For instance, bacteria which may cause swelling and infection. Another hazard is choking on jewelry or damage to teeth from biting on piercings.  Repeated clicking of jewelry against teeth has also been a known source of tooth and gum damage. Nerve damage, such as a numb tongue, is another negative result of piercings that can occur.  If piercings exist it is very important to keep the site clean and to have a dentist evaluate the area.
